A hot spring vacation destination right next to the Tsukushi River running through the Tsukushi Plain. The hot springs are weakly alkaline and well-known for their skin-beautifying benefits. The pure sulphur content also helps with removing dead skin cells and dullness. It’s thus called a “doubled-up beautifying hot spring”.

The giant Kannon statue is up on a hill overlooking Harazuru Onsen. It's commonly believed that the statue can bring good luck and fortune. At 28m tall, it is the largest Shoryu Kannon statue in the country. Not far away is another spiritual spot with another Kannon statue (the symbol of self-control power) and a Jizo statue (the god of audible power).

Lines of direct sale stores with local fresh veggies and fruits picked that same day morning, as well as handmade processed food products in which you can see the faces of the producers. The shrine is located in Jogahana Park, enshrining the gods of business prosperity, bountiful harvests & successful sake brewing, health, longevity, and academic success. The 91 Torii gates line a steep mountain slope, and the spectacular view beyond the gates is just amazing. It is a popular spiritual and photogenic spot.

Akizukijo Castle Ruins

Akizukijo Castle Ruins

Approx. 35 minutes to drive

Originally the residence of Kuroda Naoyuki, the younger brother of Kuroda Josui. In 1623, Nagamasa Kuroda's third son, Nagaoki, restored the architecture and made it into his castle. Currently, the castle ruins are designated as a historic site, and the Kuromon and Nagayamon gates are both selected as tangible prefectural cultural properties. It is also a famous spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.

Haki Grand Sunflower Field

Approx. 5 minutes to drive

As many as 160,000 sunflowers reach their flowery peak in the large field right in front of the Basaro Farm at the Harazuru roadside rest area." The single blossoms are as tall as 2m with a 30 cm flower. There is also an annual festival to celebrate the flowery peak (from mid to late September).

Asakura Sanren Suisha Waterwheels

Approx. 10 minutes to drive

The oldest auto-rotating and multi-unit waterwheels still work in Japan (designated as a national historic site). The waterwheels were created around 230 years ago. It starts to turn every year on June 17th at the Yamada Weir Water Opening Ceremony, and it normally draws water from the Chikugo River for agriculture from rice planting to harvesting. The fantastic illumination during the Obon period makes the spot even more fancy.
